Dear Professionals,

As temperatures hit new highs in most parts of India, people suffered from heat strokes, the danger of dehydration and violent heat waves. But since the monsoon has come at the right time much to our rescue, we have at last stopped sweating on soaring temperatures. Even northern India had pre-monsoon showers. Much like the weather, projects in most of the business industries were troubled due to delays caused by various reasons such as time over runs, cost over runs, loss of resources, management of vendors and so on. But thanks to the awareness in Project Management across most of the industries that today we have learnt to save the failed or troubled projects across various verticals. Project Management methodologies have not only been embraced by a good number of industries, but also been implemented successfully to carry out the projects.

The discipline of Project Management has recently started getting the due attention it deserves. As a result PMI and KPMG conducted a study in the field of Infrastructure Management. The market research revealed some interesting aspects like Infrastructure growth has been 22% in the year 2008-09 and the GOI plans to spend Rs 46.4 Trillion in this segment in the 12th Five Year Plan 2013-17. Imagine a saving of just 10% if systematic project management is adhered to instead of managing projects on ad-hoc basis. It also revealed that 82% of the projects had time over runs in a study of 1035 projects undertaken during the period 1992 to 2009 and 41% of the projects suffered from cost over runs. 77% of the respondents attributed project delays to weak project planning and monitoring. Another startling fact that came to light was that 46% of the respondents felt that monitoring of projects by independent agencies can be a critical factor to reduce the instances of Project delays and cost over runs.

All this shows that we have a long way to go. ALL PM professionals should take it upon them to ensure that all those involved in the serious business of managing projects are qualified project professionals.

After all, we go to a qualified CA for all our tax related problems and a super specialist cardiac surgeon for any heart problem. Why should we leave our projects worth hundreds and thousands of crores of rupees at the disposal of those who are not qualified and specialists in PM?

Veerendra Jaitly
